Introducing Lonnie Aragon and "SLY"

My photo
HELLO AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR VISITING OUR BLOG. LONNIE ARAGON IS A NATIVE OF COLORADO, HE CURRENTLY WORKS AS THE ASSISTANT MANAGER OF USAFA EQUESTRIAN CENTER. ON TOP OH HIS REGULAR JOB HE HAS BEEN A HORSE TRAINER FOR THE LAST 16 YEARS AND LOVES EVERY BIT OF IT, HORSE'S ARE HIS PASSION. WHEN I ASKED LONNIE WHAT I SHOULD TELL EVERYONE HERE ABOUT HIM, LONNIE REPLIED :" I enjoy working with mustangs! Horses are my life and they bring happiness to me! "

SLY

SLY
Look at this handsome boy.

Sly is not always as easy as he looks!!

We have been having some fun with Sly over the short time we have shared with him thus far... there is so much to teach him in so little time, Everyday is a new adventure and some are better than others.. No matter if we are having a good or bad day with Sly we always know where he came from and have to respect that he was a animal of the wild. In these photos you will see Lonnie and a great friend of ours Dayna who is a USAFA Cadet where we house Sly. Dayna is learning some things from Lonnie and is getting quite attached to Sly in the process.
Sly is learning some desensitizing duties tarps, flags, plastic and whatever else we can find around the barn that might frighten him in his future of being a domestic horse... No so fun for him but gets through it like a pro. Enjoy :)

Sly and his last 2 weeks

So these last couple weeks have been fun for Sly..... He has been learning how to become a horse... Those are Lonnie's words with a big SMILE :) We are very happy with Sly's progress and and look forward to our future with him. BUT Lonnie tells me everything has a price tag lol..
The funny thing is I know he really don't mean it, I see him getting attached to Sly more everyday... and he don't get attached to any horse usually... Sly is gonna be spoiled like no other with all the brushing, baths and Lonnie taking him to graze after every work out... And that is some thing I never see him do with other horse's he has in training.
Like I said before our postings are gonna be further apart as we get close to the big day..
We will keep y'all posted when new things are happening for Sly. TTYS

DAY 25

Sorry I haven't been keeping up as much as when we first started, but I wanted to kinda space my blogs further apart now that we are more days into training. Sly is a Great mustang. We have really been working on ground work and riding, just instilling it in him is our main goal. Sly learns quickly and loves to please. Today was another day of something new, we have been meaning to do this the since Saturday but have been pretty busy, so today Lonnie broke down and made some time to float Sly's teeth.....
Sly stood like a big boy and let Lonnie get it all done. Sly's trust in Lonnie is amazing
he has learned to stand still for Lonnie to put shoes on him and now float his teeth what more could we ask for......

Sly learning some thing new.

Today SLY got his tail brushed out and was so calm about it... not even 1 kick or noise from him. We are so proud of him!

Day 17

Today was very very windy out, But work still needed to be done. I didn't get to get any photos today but Sly got his first shoes and stood so well!! He was such a big boy about it. Lonnie was also happy about this because he was the one putting the shoes on him and since he was so still and trusting, made it a safe area for Lonnie to work with Sly.

Day 15 & 16

These days are going by so fast! In such a short time we have made such a progress to be proud of! We are very happy with Sly and think he is a GREAT mustang!
One of Sly's most recent things he learned about was having his first bath, Lonnie hasn't been able to do this because of weather conditions here in Colorado. We have some crazy weather here but you learn to adjust when you have been here for so long. Its pretty funny because we can have all 4 seasons within 24 hours and if you don't like one season wait 10 minutes and it could be completely different. LOL oh well to get back to Sly .... Here are some new photos from his bath time :)

PS: Got some photos of Lonnie and Sly in the pasture grazing!!

Day 14

OK So Lonnie is telling everyone our mustangs name. Now we have to get used to calling him Sly. Did more riding and practicing being tied up again. One of Sly's favorite things to do when he is all done working with Lonnie is when they walk over to the grassy pasture and graze, graze and GRAZE!! Sly is also liking his new surroundings, all the other horse's, all the people and he even likes his in door/out door stall!! All of these things are so different from his natural surroundings he was born into.

Day 11, 12 and 13th

We have been super busy these last couple of days, so I didn't get any new photos to put up. Our mustang who now has a new name, Drum roll please..... and his name is : "SLY"
WoooHooo WTG Lonnie for finally deciding on a name for this talented horse we have.
Anyways SLY has been doing very good with his first couple days of riding him. Better than we had expected. He looks so good with the saddle and all other horse gear on him, if you saw Sly in person tied up and standing so patiently you would have never know he was a horse from the wild! He looks all grown up and like a pro. Lonnie and all of his followers are very proud of his transformation in such a short period of time.

Day 10 * 1st day of riding!

ALL I CAN START OFF SAYING IS... GOTTA LOVE "Sly the stang"!!
SO, OK TODAY WAS THE FIRST DAY LONNIE ACTUALLY RODE "SLY" AND WOW IT WAS SO EXCITING AND INTERESTING TO WATCH, SO MANY FRIENDS GATHERED TO CATCH THIS NERVE RACKING EVENT.LOL
I THINK I BIT ALL MY NAILS OFF IN ANTICIPATION LOL.. THESE 10 DAYS HAVE BEEN THE LONGEST DAYS WAITING TO FINALLY SEE THAT "SLY" TRUSTED LONNIE TO GET ON AND RIDE. LONNIE FIRST STARTED OF WITH ALL THE USUAL GROUND WORK THEN MOVED TO WORKING HIM WITH ANOTHER GREAT MUSTANG NAMED "RICO" AT FIRST "Sly" DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON BUT TOOK TO IT VERY FAST AND NOW HAS A NEW FRIEND THAT LOOKS LIKE HIM INSTEAD OF A HUMAN. ONCE LONNIE FINISHED UP WITH WORKING OFF OF RICO HE GOT BACK IN ROUND PEN WITH "SLY" AND LET THE RIDING BEGIN......... THE PICTURES SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS SO ENJOY!!

PS. THANKS DAYNA GRANT FOR CAPTURING SUCH GREAT ACTION SHOTS!!

Day 8 and 9

Mustang is soooooo SMART!!! And we couldn't be happier. I cant believe my eyes, the transformation his trust and loyalty in Lonnie. Mustang just wants to be a pleaser and does such a great job at it! He loves to have his mane and body brushed. Lonnie can even braid it and he just stands there like a big baby. All I can say is..... Mane, saddle, bit, brushing and ground work.. Those are the words of the day!

DAY 7

WOW I CAN'T BELIEVE IT HAS ALREADY BEEN A WEEK!!! TIME FLIES WHEN YOUR HAVING FUN.
LET ME TELL YOU THIS MUSTANG IS DETERMINED TO LEARN... EVEN IN THE RAIN, WHICH WE HAD ALL DAY. AGAIN WE WEREN'T ABLE TO TAKE PHOTOS BECAUSE OF WEATHER. BOOOO
THE THINGS WE WORKED ON TODAY WAS ALL THE USUAL THINGS AND STILL TRYING TO GET HIM USED TO THE BIT. HE MAKES SUCH FUNNY FACES WITH IT IN. EVERY TIME HE SEE'S LONNIE COMING HE GET'S SUPER EXCITED AND RUNS UP JUST SO LONNIE CAN PET/TOUCH HIM, WHAT A BIG BABY HE IS..

Day 5 and 6

Well there are no new photos to show :( for these days, but Lonnie has been working everyday with "Mustang", and everyday is a new learning experience both for the horse and Lonnie. "Mustang" is still skeptical on all the new things he has learned but after trying it a few times and getting scared over nothing he calms down and walks right threw all the steps like he has been doing them for years! "Mustang" is a very quick learner and very smart! I forgot to mention that Lonnie introduced grain to him a few days ago but that's a no go so far lol.. Mustang thinks its more fun to kick the feeding bowl and paw grain into the ground before tempting to even try it. He sure doesn't know what he is missing out on, and Im sure he will pick up on it soon and realize what he has been missing :) Mustang is also doing a great job with saddle and bit.. this we thought would be a bigger challenge than it has been. We shall see what tomorrow brings.

PS: In case you are wondering we still haven't come up with a official name for "Mustang" as of yet. But I will make sure to keep y'all posted once we do.. Suggestions are welcome......

Day 4

OK pretty excited about today. Mustang was Saddled and was such a BIG boy about it. Lonnie is keeping him up with all the thing's he has learned so far. His progress is growing everyday!

Day 3

Things are going well.. Worked on all the same things as day 2 and introduced a saddle blanket and working on picking up his feet. "MUSTANG" Did good with it all and was very happy to see his progress.

Day 2 of our Adventure

Today was a good day! "MUSTANG" has been very curious looking at everything at the barn. He sure is very interested in all the other horse's and people riding. Lonnie's day with him was GREAT! What Lonnie worked on today was Simple tasks such as leading, brushing, lunging, sacking him out and getting the dreadlocks outta his mane. And oh boy what a MANE and tail he has.. Big Smile :)
