Introducing Lonnie Aragon and "SLY"

My photo
HELLO AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR VISITING OUR BLOG. LONNIE ARAGON IS A NATIVE OF COLORADO, HE CURRENTLY WORKS AS THE ASSISTANT MANAGER OF USAFA EQUESTRIAN CENTER. ON TOP OH HIS REGULAR JOB HE HAS BEEN A HORSE TRAINER FOR THE LAST 16 YEARS AND LOVES EVERY BIT OF IT, HORSE'S ARE HIS PASSION. WHEN I ASKED LONNIE WHAT I SHOULD TELL EVERYONE HERE ABOUT HIM, LONNIE REPLIED :" I enjoy working with mustangs! Horses are my life and they bring happiness to me! "

SLY

SLY
Look at this handsome boy.

Sly is not always as easy as he looks!!

We have been having some fun with Sly over the short time we have shared with him thus far... there is so much to teach him in so little time, Everyday is a new adventure and some are better than others.. No matter if we are having a good or bad day with Sly we always know where he came from and have to respect that he was a animal of the wild. In these photos you will see Lonnie and a great friend of ours Dayna who is a USAFA Cadet where we house Sly. Dayna is learning some things from Lonnie and is getting quite attached to Sly in the process.
Sly is learning some desensitizing duties tarps, flags, plastic and whatever else we can find around the barn that might frighten him in his future of being a domestic horse... No so fun for him but gets through it like a pro. Enjoy :)

Sly and his last 2 weeks

So these last couple weeks have been fun for Sly..... He has been learning how to become a horse... Those are Lonnie's words with a big SMILE :) We are very happy with Sly's progress and and look forward to our future with him. BUT Lonnie tells me everything has a price tag lol..
The funny thing is I know he really don't mean it, I see him getting attached to Sly more everyday... and he don't get attached to any horse usually... Sly is gonna be spoiled like no other with all the brushing, baths and Lonnie taking him to graze after every work out... And that is some thing I never see him do with other horse's he has in training.
Like I said before our postings are gonna be further apart as we get close to the big day..
We will keep y'all posted when new things are happening for Sly. TTYS

DAY 25

Sorry I haven't been keeping up as much as when we first started, but I wanted to kinda space my blogs further apart now that we are more days into training. Sly is a Great mustang. We have really been working on ground work and riding, just instilling it in him is our main goal. Sly learns quickly and loves to please. Today was another day of something new, we have been meaning to do this the since Saturday but have been pretty busy, so today Lonnie broke down and made some time to float Sly's teeth.....
Sly stood like a big boy and let Lonnie get it all done. Sly's trust in Lonnie is amazing
he has learned to stand still for Lonnie to put shoes on him and now float his teeth what more could we ask for......

Sly learning some thing new.

Today SLY got his tail brushed out and was so calm about it... not even 1 kick or noise from him. We are so proud of him!

Day 17

Today was very very windy out, But work still needed to be done. I didn't get to get any photos today but Sly got his first shoes and stood so well!! He was such a big boy about it. Lonnie was also happy about this because he was the one putting the shoes on him and since he was so still and trusting, made it a safe area for Lonnie to work with Sly.

Day 15 & 16

These days are going by so fast! In such a short time we have made such a progress to be proud of! We are very happy with Sly and think he is a GREAT mustang!
One of Sly's most recent things he learned about was having his first bath, Lonnie hasn't been able to do this because of weather conditions here in Colorado. We have some crazy weather here but you learn to adjust when you have been here for so long. Its pretty funny because we can have all 4 seasons within 24 hours and if you don't like one season wait 10 minutes and it could be completely different. LOL oh well to get back to Sly .... Here are some new photos from his bath time :)

PS: Got some photos of Lonnie and Sly in the pasture grazing!!

Day 14

OK So Lonnie is telling everyone our mustangs name. Now we have to get used to calling him Sly. Did more riding and practicing being tied up again. One of Sly's favorite things to do when he is all done working with Lonnie is when they walk over to the grassy pasture and graze, graze and GRAZE!! Sly is also liking his new surroundings, all the other horse's, all the people and he even likes his in door/out door stall!! All of these things are so different from his natural surroundings he was born into.
